Andaman Season Opening 2026: What Changes in October (And Why It's the Smartest Month to Book)

The rain hasn't fully stopped yet. Stand on Rajiv Gandhi Water Sports Complex jetty in Sri Vijaya Puram this week and you'll still catch a squall rolling in off the sea by mid-afternoon. But something has already shifted — the swell is shorter, the ferries are running closer to schedule, and the dive boats are quietly getting their compressors serviced.

The Andaman season is turning. Over the next eight weeks the islands go from "check before you book" to the best diving and island-hopping conditions of the year. This guide covers exactly what changes, when, and what it means for what you pay.

What "season opening" actually means in the Andamans

The southwest monsoon dominates the Andaman Sea from roughly June to September. It doesn't switch off on a date — it withdraws. Through late September and October the rain bands thin out, the wind drops, and the sea state settles from choppy to glassy.

That single change cascades into everything a traveller cares about:

• Ferry reliability. Inter-island crossings between Sri Vijaya Puram, Swaraj Dweep (Havelock) and Shaheed Dweep (Neil Island) stop being a weekly gamble. Cancellations become the exception rather than the pattern.

• Underwater visibility. Monsoon runoff and churned sediment settle out. Visibility improves markedly, and 20–30m is common at the better sites once the water clears.

• Small-boat access. Elephant Beach, North Bay, Ross Island and the Marine National Park runs need calm water. They resume properly and stop getting called off at the jetty.

• Water sports. Parasailing, sea walking, jet ski and banana rides all need a settled sea. Through the monsoon they're a coin toss. From October they're near-daily.

Month by month: September to December 2026

If you want the honest local answer: late October and the first half of November are the sweet spot. You get near-December sea conditions without December prices, and you're diving on reefs that have had four months to recover from the last season's traffic.

One honest caveat: October to early December is also cyclone season in the Bay of Bengal. It rarely wrecks a trip, but it does mean you should keep an eye on advisories, take the travel insurance, and not book a ferry that lands you at the airport the same afternoon as your flight.

The Jolly Buoy switch: the one date most itineraries get wrong

Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park protects its reefs by rotating visitor access between two islands on a six-month cycle. Red Skin Island is open roughly May to October. Jolly Buoy opens from November through April.

This trips people up constantly. Travellers plan a "Jolly Buoy day trip" for an October date, then find that the only permit being issued for that window is for Red Skin. Both are excellent — Jolly Buoy has the more famous coral gardens, Red Skin the quieter beach — but they are not interchangeable on your calendar.

One practical detail people get wrong: the permit is not issued at the jetty. You apply in advance — usually a day or two ahead — at the Directorate of Tourism / Forest Department office in Sri Vijaya Puram. Wandoor Jetty sells you the boat ticket, not the permit. Daily visitor numbers are capped, and plastic is banned on both islands.

Diving: why October reefs are the best reefs

Ask any instructor on Swaraj Dweep when they'd choose to dive, and they won't say December. They'll say now — the shoulder weeks when visibility has returned but the boats aren't full yet.

Through October and November you get clearing water, warm 28–29°C temperatures, and dive sites that aren't sharing a mooring line with four other boats. Nemo Reef, Aquarium and the Havelock house reefs are all in good condition. The bigger offshore sites — Johnny's Gorge, Dixon's Pinnacle — need the settled conditions that only really arrive from late October onwards.

Barren Island, India's only active volcano and one of the finest liveaboard destinations in Asia, effectively runs on the same clock. Operators start scheduling trips as the sea allows.

Diwali falls on 8 November 2026 — plan around it

This is the single most important date on your budget. Diwali 2026 lands on Sunday, 8 November, with the festival period running 6–10 November.

What that means practically:

• Flights into Sri Vijaya Puram spike hardest in the ten days either side. Book those first — they move before anything else.

• Ferry seats on the premium operators (Makruzz, Nautika, Green Ocean) sell out on popular morning departures. The 6:30am and 7:30am Port Blair–Havelock sailings go first.

• Hotels on Swaraj Dweep and Shaheed Dweep hold festival rates.

• Activity slots — sea walk, scuba, parasailing — get tight because operator capacity is fixed by boat and instructor numbers, not by demand.

The workaround most seasoned travellers use: go in the last ten days of October, or 15–30 November. Same sea, same visibility, materially lower cost.

What things actually cost right now

One thing to know about ferries: the fuel surcharge and the ₹50 port service fee are collected on behalf of the ferry operator and passed straight through. They're part of the fare you see, not a hidden markup.

Your booking order of operations

For an October–November trip, book in this sequence:

1. Flights first. They're the most volatile line item and the one you can't substitute.

2. Ferries second. Premium operators open seats well in advance and the good morning slots close early. Lock the Port Blair → Havelock → Neil → Port Blair chain before you book hotels — your ferry times dictate your check-in dates, not the other way round.

3. Hotels third, once your island nights are fixed.

4. Activities last, but not too late. Sea walk and scuba slots on Swaraj Dweep are genuinely capacity-limited.

Leave a buffer day in Sri Vijaya Puram before your return flight. Even in good season, one delayed ferry shouldn't cost you a flight home.

What's coming to the islands

Two developments worth knowing about if you're planning further ahead.

Seaplanes. MEHAIR Seaplanes has been awarded five sectors from Sri Vijaya Puram — to Swaraj Dweep, Shaheed Dweep, Long Island, Mayabunder and Hutbay. Preparation is at an advanced stage, with the first three routes expected to start once water-based infrastructure work completes. It won't replace ferries, but it would put the far-north islands within reach of a short trip for the first time.

A published events calendar. The administration launched a tourism calendar running June 2026 to April 2027, with monthly events across the islands — including the Monsoon Food & Culture Festival and the Island Tourism Festival at ITF Ground from 27–31 December. Worth checking before you fix dates if local culture is part of why you're coming.

Is October a good time to visit the Andamans?
Yes — it's one of the best-value months of the year. Rain has largely eased, the sea is calming, ferries run reliably, and you avoid both monsoon disruption and December peak pricing.

Can I visit Jolly Buoy Island in October 2026?
No. Jolly Buoy operates roughly November to April. Red Skin Island is the open alternative until the end of October.

Will ferries be cancelled in September?
It's possible, though it gets less likely as the month progresses. Build one buffer day into a September or October itinerary — cyclone season runs into early December, so a spare day is cheap insurance.
